What We Do

Volunteer consulting programme

At the beginning of each year, we open applications for University of Canterbury students from a wide range of academic backgrounds to take part in our consulting programme. We select a number of students based on their applications and performance at two assessment evenings at the beginning of the year.

These students are split into groups, and are paired with a local not-for-profit to work on a year-long consultancy project to provide advice to the not-for-profit. This project culminates in a report and presentation which is delivered to the not-for-profit at the end of the year.

Throughout the year, consultants are invited to take part in workshops hosted by industry professionals on topics related to the program, e.g. ‘working with non-profits’ or ‘speaking and presenting.’ Consultants also receive guidance throughout the year from professional mentors.

The purpose of the program is for students to get a feel of what consulting real organizations is like. For the local not-for-profits, 180DC presents an opportunity to receive free advice from University students.

What is Consulting Event

A consulting event is an engaging and informative session designed to provide students with insight into the consulting and broader corporate industry. Typically held in a panel format, these events feature professionals from a range of firms who share their experiences, discuss their career journeys, and offer practical advice on navigating the corporate world.

Attendees gain valuable exposure to what working life is really like in consulting—from day-to-day responsibilities to long-term career development. These events also offer an excellent opportunity for students to ask questions, build connections, and better understand the expectations and opportunities within the industry.

Whether you're exploring career options or actively preparing for a future in consulting, these events are a valuable step in bridging the gap between university and the professional world.

Case Competitions

Students work in groups to analyze the case, develop innovative solutions, and present their recommendations to a panel of judges—often composed of industry professionals and academics.

These competitions simulate the work consultants do, helping participants build skills in critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and strategic analysis. Case competitions are also a great way to gain hands-on experience, connect with like-minded peers, and receive feedback from experienced professionals.

Whether you're new to consulting or looking to sharpen your problem-solving skills, case competitions offer a valuable and practical learning experience.
